About
The Compass portal brings together various educational
and training resources developed by the Directorate
of Youth and Sport in Human Rights Education with
a special focus on young people.
The Council of Europe initiated its Human Rights
Education Youth Programme in 2000 in order to bring
human rights into the mainstream of youth work. The
Programme has constituted a modest - but firm - attempt
to make HRE accessible and attractive to those youth
workers, youth leaders, trainers and young people
who work with other young people, mostly in non-formal
education. The programme aspires to bring human rights
and HRE, defined as the promotion of equality in human
dignity, closer to the reality of young people.
The availability of accessible, ready-to-use and
adaptable educational methods and activities has been
identified by the youth partners of the programme
as one of the keys to its success.
The portal and the activities it contains have been
designed to serve the wider community of all those
engaging in HRE in formal and non-formal education,
both in explicit and implicit ways. It is designed
also as a platform for exchanging experiences and
providing feedback to others. We hope you will find
it useful and send us your feedback and suggestions,
notably through evaluations and sharing your experiences
under the 'tips from users'.
The four educational manuals allow users to take
full advantage of the possibilities offered by information
technology today, namely allowing for links to be
created across chapters, activities and the different
tools, and making it easy to search for further information
and resources on the Internet.
"Alien '93" was
the very first resource book on combating racism and
xenophobia, published by the Directorate of Youth
and Sport.
"All different – all Equal”
Education Pack, is a manual that provides youth workers,
trainers and group leaders with ideas, resources,
methods and activities for informal intercultural
education with young people.
DOmino is a practical manual on
how to use peer-group education as a means of fighting
racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and intolerance.
COMPASS, the manual on HRE with
young people, has been designed as the main tool for
Human Rights Education. COMPASS indicates and suggests
different ways and directions for HRE in formal and
non-formal educational settings.
